Kelilah Ava Son was borne into heaven on June 10, 2020. Her journey here on Earth ended during labor, yet before this, during the 40 weeks and 3 days in her mother’s womb, Kelilah received abundant love and, in turn, gave hope, joy, and purpose to all who knew her.
At 20 weeks, Kelilah was diagnosed with Edward’s Syndrome, and soon after, her parents began writing regular updates entitled “Kelilah’s Journey” to mark the progress of her development, knowing that her condition was fatal. So while most babies in utero are celebrated by those nearest, Kelilah was upheld and loved and prayed for by hundreds of people around the world. United in their love for this baby and her parents, friends and relatives reached out in sympathy and compassion, seeing these treasured months of life as sacred and significant. Each day that she grew, Kelilah was loved immensely.
No one showed this more or enjoyed her more than her parents, Jason and Joanne Son. When their family traveled to Joanne’s home in Bangkok, Kelilah excitedly responded when her mother swam in pools and ate local Thai dishes. In addition to Thailand, Kelilah also visited Japan, Canada, and Singapore, traveling more in her mommy’s belly than many people do in a lifetime. Still, some of the most cherished moments were when she consistently responded to her daddy’s voice as he read from The Jesus Storybook Bible every night and when she moved each time her parents sang “The Goodness of God” and “He Knows My Name.”
When delivered at 7:26am on June 10, Kelilah measured 4.2 pounds and 44 cm, yet the expanse of her reach cannot be measured. She had her daddy’s lips and her mommy’s long toes, but she also held in her little body the likeness of her Creator and His manifested workmanship. For ten hours, her parents carried and kissed her – holding her tightly in order to ultimately let her go.
During her brief life, Kelilah swam circles (literally) in the joy of the Lord and showed us all what matters. Kelilah has reached home with her heavenly Father, yet her journey does continue here as we honor her memory by letting the somber realization of death silence distractions and return us to what was her simple, daily routine: moving eagerly to the sound of God’s word and our song response of praise.
